Donate to buy sanitary pads

Girls in rural Uganda miss up to eight days of study each school term because they are on their periods, a study of menstrual management in Uganda found. This was due to lack of washrooms, lack of sanitary pads and bullying by peers, focus groups with 12 to 17 year olds in 20 primary schools in five districts revealed. The eight days on average translates into 11% of the total learning days in a year. It's a school absence rate that is hard for the girl to make up for and partly accounts for girls dropping out of high school.

We will buy sanitary pads and give them to 500 poor girls in a school in rural Kampala, Eastern Uganda. The number of girls dropping out of school increase as they have reached puberty. Stigma around menstruation is one of the reasons for this. We give out reusable sanitary pads as well as educate the girls about menstrual health and practices. The objective of this project is to eliminate stigma, educate youth, and keep 500 girls in school. We hope to raise US$ 7500 to purchase reusable sanitary pads for 500 girls to help them stay in school and avoid using unhygienic materials. (Each Pad kit including training will cost US$15 and can last for one year.). As a contributor to Malezi Smiles Uganda we make sure your donation goes directly to supporting our cause.
